The Cape Otway Centre for Conservation Ecology

Protecting Threatened Beach Nesting Birds - Hooded Plover Survey 2010

Beach-nesting birds live in a naturally dynamic environment and the threatened Hooded Plover is one of a number of beach-nesting bird species that live along the Victorian coast. The Hooded Plover breeds on ocean beaches between September and March and, in turn, is subject to increased threats during their breeding season. Hooded Plover nest success is extremely low - only 10% of chicks survive.

The Cape Otway Centre for Conservation Ecology is working with Birds Australia to gather information about these birds in order to help manage and conserve the Hooded Plover into the future.

As a result of Hooded Plover surveys, Parks Victoria Rangers and Birds Australia are able to respond quickly to protect nests - boosting chick survival by 40%.

We welcome you to join us this Spring as we regularly monitor Hooded Plover nests, check on the status of eggs and chicks, assess surrounding threats and provide crucial information to Birds Australia researchers. Go to the Great Ocean Ecolodge Bookings and Enquiries page to make a booking now.
